Everyone needs help now and then to understand difficult concepts, to get schoolwork organized, or to move past a mental block.  HCC is committed to helping you succeed in your classes, so they hire many tutors whom you can visit for free to get that additional help.   In spring of 2014, 89% of students who received tutoring in math and 86.5% of those who received tutoring in English succeeded with an A, B, or C grade in their class.

Tutors equip you to learn independently.  Thus, they will not to give you answers or do the work for you.  Instead, they will clarify ideas, teach you study skills, help you manage your time and class papers, give you extra opportunities to practice and quiz yourself, and help you find and use resources.  They can be your cheerleaders, helping you gain the confidence and skills you need to successfully direct and manage your own learning.

Drop-In Tutoring

Whenever RLRC is open, HCC students can drop by the front desk for help with writing, or drop by room 109 for help with math.  Come prepared with a specific question and with your class assignment, books, notes, and anything else you may need.

Online Tutoring

If you can’t make it to RLRC to get help with math or writing, you can receive tutoring online for them through HCC Online (Angel) during RLRC’s open hours.   To access online tutoring, go to the Resources tab in your DragonZone account, and choose the HCC Math Tutor or HCC Writing Tutor Group.  On the group’s home page, click the link to the forum, read the instructions, and post your question.  We try to respond within an hour, but please note that we may be slower if the face-to-face labs are busy.

Personal Tutoring

Perhaps you need help in another subject that the drop-in labs and SI sessions don’t cover, or perhaps those sources of help don’t suit your style of learning or schedule.  Then you can request a personal tutor who will meet with you and perhaps one other person in your class.   You may arrange regular appointments for one or two hours a week in Rimmer or online.  If we do not currently have a tutor for the class you’re in, we will try to find one or will recommend another method for you to get the help you need.

To set up personal tutoring, stop by the front desk or call 665-3449 for more information, or complete the Personal Tutoring Request Form and send it to tutors@hutchcc.edu.

Athletic Tutoring

Athletes’ schedules are filled with practices, classes, and games. To accommodate this, HCC offers tutoring at certain times in the evenings during the fall and spring semesters in Rimmer.  Evening tutoring provides athletes with on-on-one tutoring, as well as access to a computer lab to work on assignments and online classes.   Athletes may contact their coaches about expectations for student athlete attendance and for the team’s study time slots.  Alternately, contact Paula Freeman at 620-665-3439 or freemanp@hutchcc.edu, or after 5 pm, contact Jan Stutzman at 620-665-3449 or stutzmanj@hutchcc.edu.
